China, Shanxi Province Qing dynasty, 18^th century

Constructed in northern elm (yumu) with a rectangular molded edge top set with a single floating panel, joined to the high wrap-around stretcher with two pair of vertical struts on the long sides and one pair on each end, scrolled brackets in the corners, on legs of circular section. Three horizontal braces add support on the underside.

H: 33 ¼ in., W: 62 in., D: 18 in.

China, Shanxi Province Qing dynasty, 19^th century

The purple elm (ziyumu) top is constructed with a center floating panel. The recessed and slightly splayed round-section legs are joined by a straight narrow apron with rectangular shaped spandrels. There are double oval-section stretchers between the front and back legs. Traces of the original burgundy/brown lacquer remain under a thick modern clear lacquer.
